The Fringes of the Fleet, stories of the British Navy, by Rudyard Kipling, 1916 edition.

Sorry, this item has sold.

Written by Rudyard Kipling. Published in the U.S. 1916. (First U.K. and U.S. editions published in 1915.) Doubleday, Page & Company.

"Where the East wind is brewed fresh and
fresh every morning,
And the balmy night-breezes blow straight
from the pole,
I heard a destroyer sing: "What an enjoyable
life does one lead on the North Sea Patrol!"

THE AUXILIARIES

"The Navy is very old and very wise. Much of her wisdom is on record and available for reference; but more of it works in the unconscious blood of those who serve her. She has a thousand years of experience, and can find precedent or parallel for any situation that the force of the weather or the malice of the King's enemies may bring about."

The three chapters that comprise the book - The Auxiliaries, Submarines, and Patrols - were commissioned as a series of articles by The Daily Telegraph on Kipling's perspectives on Great Britain's naval defenses.

Rudyard Kipling (1860 - 1936) was a British author and poet best known for his works of fiction, such as The Jungle Book, Kim, and Just So Stories. He was also a prolific journalist, essayist, and Nobel laureate in literature. Kipling was born in India and spent his early years there, which influenced his writing and gave him a unique perspective on colonialism and imperialism.
