Johnny Gruelle (1880 - 1938) was an American writer, newspaper cartoonist, and illustrator. He wrote and illustrated many children's books, such as Friendly Fairies and My Very Own Fairy Stories. In 1915, he found an old rag doll in his attic and gave it a new face, creating the first Raggedy Ann doll for his daughter Marcella. He later added a male companion, Raggedy Andy, and wrote a series of books featuring their adventures.
