Written by Marguerite W. Davol. Illustrated by Robert Sabuda. First edition, fourth printing, 1997. Atheneum Books for Young Readers.

"Long, long ago, there lived a humble artist named Mi Fei. Between each day's sunrise and sunset, Mi Fei would dip his narrow brushes in colored inks and paint on paper scrolls. He loved to paint the glorious past - scenes of the gods and their festivals, portraits of great heroes and their deeds.'

One day, Mi Fei is chosen by the people of his village to face the dragon Sui Jen, who has awakened from its hundred-year sleep and is wreaking havoc on the land. Mi Fei uses his artistic skills and his wisdom to calm the dragon and restore peace. The book features beautiful gatefold illustrations that evoke the style of Chinese narrative scroll painting.

She received the Parents' Choice Award, the Children's Book Council Notable Book Award, and the Smithsonian Notable Book Award.

Robert Sabuda (1965 - ) is a renowned American artist and paper engineer who specializes in creating children's pop-up books. He developed an interest in paper engineering as a child, inspired by a pop-up version of Cinderella illustrated by Vojtěch Kubašta. His first pop-up book, The Christmas Alphabet, was published in 1994 and received critical acclaim. Since then, he has created The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and Encyclopedia Prehistorica. He is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and talented paper engineers in the world, with The New York Times calling him "indisputably the king of pop-ups". He collaborates frequently with Matthew Reinhart, another pop-up book artist.
