The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting, winner of the 1923 Newbery Medal, is a classic children's novel that follows the adventures of a physician who can talk to animals. The book is the second in a series of twelve novels featuring Doctor Dolittle and his animal friends. In this book, Doctor Dolittle sets sail from his home in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh with Tommy Stubbins to explore the world. Along the way, he conspires with bulls in Spain to stop the bullfighting, introduces Tommy to the Great Glass Sea Snail, and enlists a pod of whales to push Spider Monkey Island back to South America.
Hugh Lofting (1886 - 1947) was an English American writer who began writing stories for magazines, until his career was interrupted by World War I, during which he served as a lieutenant in the Irish Guards. He wrote letters to his children from the front, and invented the character of Doctor Dolittle to entertain them. After the war, he turned his letters into books, and published The Story of Doctor Dolittle in 1920, followed by several sequels.
