Five Little Peppers, a classic children's novel, tells the story of the Pepper family, who live in a little brown house in a poor town. The five children, Ben, Polly, Joel, Davie and Phronsie, face many hardships and adventures with courage and cheerfulness. When they're rescued from poverty by a kindly wealthy man and his grandson, they also learn valuable lessons about love, kindness, generosity and gratitude.
Margaret Sidney (1844 - 1924) was the pen name of Harriett Mulford Stone Lothrop, an American writer of children's fiction. She was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and showed a talent for writing and imagination from an early age. She published her first stories in a magazine called Wide Awake, where she caught the attention of the editor, Daniel Lothrop, who later became her husband. Her most famous work was the Five Little Peppers series of 12 books. She also ran her husband's publishing company after his death in 1892, and was active in various civic and historical causes. She lived in a historic house in Concord, Massachusetts, called The Wayside, which had been previously owned by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott.
