American Child, A Sonnet Sequence, 1965 edition, by Paul Engle.

Written by Paul Engle. Third printing, 1965. Random House.

American Child is a collection of 35 sonnets dedicated to the poet's daughter. Engle, who was the director of the Iowa Writers' Workshop for many years, expresses his love and admiration for his child and her growth. He also reflects on the themes of time, beauty, nature, and human society. The sonnets are lyrical, optimistic, and heartfelt, showing Engle's influence from Whitman and Sandburg. Signed and inscribed by author.

Paul Engle (1908 - 1991) was an American poet, editor, teacher, literary critic, novelist, and playwright. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and studied at Coe College, the University of Iowa, Columbia University, and Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He won the Yale Series of Younger Poets award for his first poetry collection, Worn Earth (1932), and became a best-selling poet with American Song (1934). He was the director of the Iowa Writers' Workshop from 1941 to 1965, where he mentored many famous writers and brought distinguished faculty to the program. He also co-founded the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in 1967 with his wife, Chinese poet Hualing Nieh Engle. He was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1976 for his work supporting international writers.
