Jonathan is learning much about animals from his father, but his parents, and aunts and uncles, assure him that there are no bears on Hemlock Mountain. One day, his mother sends him to fetch a big iron pot from his aunt, who lives on the other side of Hemlock Mountain. Along the way, he encounters various animals and people. He also faces his fear of bears, which he believes are not real. He learns soon enough to trust what he can see for himself. The book is based on a Pennsylvania folk tale. A Newbery Honor Book.
