Tomie dePaola (1934 - 2020) was an American writer and illustrator who created more than 260 children's books, including Strega Nona, one of his most beloved books. He was born in Meriden, Connecticut and studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He taught art at various colleges and retired from teaching in 1978 to focus on his books. He received many awards for his work, including the Children's Literature Legacy Award in 2011.
