Minette, a young cat in 19th-century Paris who dreams of a better life, falls in love with the handsome Count Bisquet with whom she has a kitten. But the feckless Count abandons her for an actress, a cunning actress playing the role of The Chinese Beauty. Heartbroken, Minette leaves Count Bisquet and returns home to her mother and sister. When he annuals their marriage, the good, decent lawyer, Lionel, professes his love for her. But Minette decides to pursue her literary ambitions and writes Memoirs of a Pussy Cat. It becomes a hit! Minette moves her mother and sister to Memoir Manor, and eventually welcomes Lionel.
The book is wordless, presented as a stage drama where the reader is a member of the audience, and the characters' gestures and expressions tell the story. McClintock's beautiful and expressive pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings evoke the style and atmosphere of French art and literature.

Her books are known for their whimsical humor, historical accuracy, and detailed illustrations.
