Written by Ruth Krauss. Illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Reprint, first published in 1948. Michael di Capua Books - Harper Collins Publishers.
Max's dog is not happy when he's forced to compete with a teddy bear. So he snatches it and the chase is on. Bears everywhere...bears staring, bears protesting, millionaire bears, bears collecting taxi fares. "With just 27 words, the inimitable Ruth Krauss created a charming little universe."
Ruth Krauss (1901 - 1993) was a renowned American writer of children's books and poems for adults. Born in Baltimore, she studied art, music and design at various institutions, but found her true calling in writing for children. She married Crockett Johnson, another children's book author, in 1943 and collaborated with him on several books, such as The Carrot Seed. She also worked with Maurice Sendak, who illustrated eight of her books, including A Hole Is to Dig. Her books are known for their playful language, imaginative characters and rebellious spirit.
Maurice Sendak (1928 - 2012) was a visionary American illustrator and author. His most acclaimed book, "Where the Wild Things Are," published in 1963, is a classic in children's literature. Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present earned Sendak the first of seven Caldecott Honor awards. In 1970, he won the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award for his lifetime contribution to children's literature. His other works include the Little Bear series, In The Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, and many others. He also created scenery for theatrical productions, including Brundibar and Nutcracker.
