Planet Drum by Mickey Hart is a world music album that features percussionists from various countries and cultures. The album showcases the diversity and richness of drumming traditions around the world, and blends them into a new global sound. The album won the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 1991, and was accompanied by a book that explores the history and significance of percussion and rhythm. Planet Drum is also the name of Hart's live ensemble that performs drum music with some of the same musicians who played on the album.

Mickey Hart (1943 - ), born Michael Steven Hartman in Brooklyn, is an American percussionist best known as one of two drummers in the rock band The Grateful Dead. He joined The Grateful Dead in 1967 and played with them until their final show in 1995. He also collaborated with other musicians such as Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, and Babatunde Olatunji. He won two Grammy Awards for his albums Planet Drum and Global Drum Project. He is also known for his exploration of the "rhythm code of the universe" and use of a digital database called RAMU (Random Access Musical Universe).

Fredric Lieberman (1940-2004) was an American ethnomusicologist, composer, music professor, and author. He taught at the University of California at Santa Cruz for over four decades, and among his many projects, established the Grateful Dead Archive at UC Santa Cruz.

Sonneborn is an American scholar, musician and producer who has worked extensively with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, producing numerous albums for Smithsonian Folkways, including collections of Arab-American music, Central Asian music, Venezuelan carnival music and Iraqi oud music.
