Written by Alvin Gordon. Illustrated by Ted De Grazia. First published in 1965. This edition published in 1973. The University of Arizona Press, Tucson.
"From the highlands of Sonora
To the Isthmus of Tehuantepec,
From the quiet village plaza
To the turbulent metropolis,
From the lowest of dwellings
To the most opulent of mansions,
I hear this sound -
Swish, Swish, Swish -
I heard this sound,
The sound of the
Brooms that sweep Mexico."
Brooms of Mexico is a collection of poems that reflect the culture, history and landscape of Mexico through the everyday experience and impressions of the author.
Alvin Gordon was a Boston-born, Harvard-educated American author, actor and director who worked in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s, and documented his experiences living and working in Mexico.
Ettore "Ted" DeGrazia (1909-1982) was an American artist of many talents. He was born in Morenci, Arizona Territory, to Italian immigrants who worked in the copper mines and studied art at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Later, he studied in Mexico City with Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco. He became famous for his colorful images of Native American children and cultures of the American Southwest. His studio and gallery, the Gallery in the Sun, is now a museum and historic district.
