Title: Home To Me: Poems Across America
Author: Lee Bennett Hopkins (Anthologist)
Illustrator/Artist: Stephen Alcorn
Genre: Children's Poetry / American Literature / Picture Book
Edition: First Edition (2003)
Publisher: Orchard Books (An imprint of Scholastic Inc.)
Celebrate the rich, multicultural tapestry of American life through this visually striking collection of verse. Home To Me: Poems Across America brings together fifteen original, specially commissioned works from contemporary poets. Each poem offers an intimate glimpse into what "home" truly means to a child growing up in different corners of the nation. Readers are transported across diverse landscapes, from a quiet Christmas tree farm in New England to a sun-baked desert dwelling in the American Southwest.
Children will pedal through the bone-dry grasses of the wide-open prairie, stand on sacred reservation ground where Mother Earth always rests beneath their feet, and wake up to the rhythmic hum of city street sweepers washing away the morning litter. Accompanied by bold, stylized artwork, this anthology highlights how geography shapes our identity and our sense of belonging. An excellent read-aloud story for families to share at bedtime, a resource for classrooms, and a heartwarming addition to any collector's library of modern children's literature.

Lee Bennett Hopkins
Author/Anthologist Lee Bennett Hopkins (1938 – 2019): An American educator, author, and advocate of poetry for young audiences. Recognized by the Children's Literature Association Quarterly as one of the most prolific anthologists of children's verse in the United States, Hopkins committed his long career to making poetry accessible to young minds. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he overcame a challenging childhood to become an elementary school teacher before serving as a resource specialist for Bank Street College and an editor for Scholastic Inc. Over his lifetime, he authored and compiled more than one hundred books, earning the Christopher Award, the Golden Kite Honor, and the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion for his lasting contributions to children's literature. His legacy also lives on through the annual Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award, established in 1993 to recognize outstanding new book achievements in the genre.
Artist Stephen Alcorn (1957 - Present): An American painter, printmaker, illustrator, and graphic designer known for his bold, historical, and fine-art-infused visual style. The son of famed mid-century designer John Alcorn, Stephen spent his formative youth in Florence, Italy, where he developed an appreciation for classical printmaking and relief techniques. His distinct visual approach blends rich linocut textures, fluid ink washes, and vibrant palettes that bring a dramatic, tactile energy to the page. Alcorn's work includes Let It Shine: Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters by Andrea Davis Pinkney, and Catherine Clinton's historical anthology I, Too, Sing America: Three Centuries of African American Poetry.
