Written by Sigrid Undset. Translated from Norwegian by Henriette C. Naeseth. Third printing, February 2, 1942. A Borzoi book, Alfred A. Knopf, New York.

Return To The Future by Sigrid Undset is a memoir of the author's escape from Nazi-occupied Norway during World War II. Undset recounts her perilous journey across Sweden, Russia, Japan, and finally to the United States, where she hopes to find freedom and democracy. Along the way, she observes the different cultures, landscapes, and challenges she encounters, and reflects on the future of civilization and humanity.

Sigrid Undset (1882 - 1945) was a Norwegian-Danish novelist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928 for her historical novels set in medieval Norway. She was born in Kalundborg, Denmark, in 1882, but moved to Norway with her family when she was two years old. Her father was an archaeologist who inspired her interest in Norwegian culture and history. She worked as a secretary for an engineering company for ten years before she married and started writing. Her early novels focused on the challenges of modern women in society, such as Jenny (1911). She converted to Catholicism in 1924 and explored religious themes in her later works. Her most famous work is Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-22), a trilogy that follows the life of a woman from childhood to death in 14th-century Norway. She also wrote another historical saga, The Master of Hestviken (1925-27), and several novels about contemporary issues. She fled Norway during the Nazi occupation and lived in the United States until 1945, then returned to Norway after the war.
