French Baedeker travel guide, 1901 17th edition, for Belgium and Hollande.

$65.00

Baedeker travel guides have provided travelers with comprehensive and authoritative information about their destinations since the early 19th century. This 1901 Belgique et Hollande guide, in French, covered the history, geography, culture, art, architecture, and attractions of each region, city, and town in these two countries, with detailed maps and illustrations. The guide also provided practical advice on transportation, accommodation, dining, shopping, and entertainment, as well as tips on etiquette, customs, and language.

The guides were started by Karl Baedeker, a German publisher and bookseller, who published his first guidebook on the Rhine region in 1832. He was inspired by the English guidebooks of John Murray, but he added his own innovations, such as detailed maps, route descriptions, accommodation and restaurant recommendations, and a star system to mark the most important sights. Baedeker also travelled extensively to collect and verify the information for his guides, which he updated regularly.

After Karl Baedeker's death in 1859, his sons and grandsons continued the family business and expanded the range of guides to cover other parts of Europe, as well as North America, Asia and Africa. The guides were published in German, English and French, and became very popular among travelers of the 19th and early 20th centuries. They were known for their accuracy, reliability and quality, as well as their distinctive red covers. Baedeker guides were also influential in shaping the cultural perceptions and expectations of travelers, as they highlighted the historical, artistic and natural features of each destination. Baedeker guides are still published by a German company that acquired the rights to the name in 1984.
