Hendrik Willem van Loon (1882 - 1944) was a Dutch-American historian, journalist, and children's book author. He was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and immigrated to the United States in 1902 to study at Cornell University. He wrote and illustrated many books, including The Story of Mankind, which won the first Newbery Medal in 1922. He was also a correspondent for the Associated Press during the Russian Revolution of 1905 and World War I.

Gold-embossed red cloth cover boards: Corners very lightly bumped; two pinpoint spots on back cover; very light fading of spine; small amount of chipping of paper illustration on spine. Names on front pastedown and fly leaf. Light edge tanning, else pages are clean, undamaged, and complete.
