Written by Nancy Sherman. Illustrated by Edward Sorel. First edition, 1963. Golden Press, Inc.

"Out in the country, far from town,
a hot sun blazed on Farmer Brown.
He worked beneath a cloudless sky:
The cornstalks drooped; the brook ran dry;
The cattle had no grass to graze;
It hadn't rained for days and days.

"The weatherman said, "Hot tonight,
And not a drop of rain in sight."
The farmer wiped his weary brow.
"There won't be any harvest now,"
He cried, "My work was all in vain.
The crops will die without some rain."
He watered Sue, his thirsty sow,
His work horse Jack and Bess the cow,
The piglets in their little pen,
And Gwendolyn, his favorite hen."

Plucky Gwendolyn, our heroine, joins forces with her friend the weathercock to save Farmer Brown from the villainous Nimbus Flood.
