A Wine Love In Exile

"At the end of the second war, I was one of the few Englishmen with access to a reasonable cellar. In the summer of 1934, a novel of mine made a fleeting appearance in the best-seller list and I found myself with an unbudgeted credit balance of three hundred pounds. I invested it in wine, mostly in vintage port - Croft's 1912, Graham's 1920, Oftley's Boa Vista 1923 (rarely met but excellent, if slightly over-sweet, and now I should imagine, unobtainable), Dow's 1924 and Cockburn's 1927. At that time you could buy the '27 vintage for three pounds a dozen, and I acquired quite a quantity of wine with my surplus pennies."

In Praise of Wine and Certain Noble Spirits is a personal tribute and guide to the noteworthy products of grape and grain, covering various types of wine, brandy, whisky, gin, rum, and other spirits. The book is written in a witty and engaging style, with anecdotes and historical facts. Waugh shares his passion and knowledge of wine and spirits, as well as his opinions and preferences. The book is a classic of its genre, and a delight for anyone who enjoys a good drink.

Alec Waugh (1898 - 1981) was a British novelist and travel writer. He was the son of Arthur Waugh, a literary critic and publisher, and the elder brother of Evelyn Waugh, a famous writer. Alec Waugh wrote his first novel, The Loom of Youth, when he was only 17, based on his experiences at Sherborne School. He served in the First World War and was captured by the Germans. He later lived in various tropical countries and wrote many popular novels, such as Island in the Sun and The Mule on the Minaret.
