The Legend of the Loom
A Navajo Legend

A Navajo weaver always sits with her legs folder under to the right side. She weaves a spirit line from an interior background to the edge of each rug to allow her "thinking spirit" to escape when the rug is finished.

"In a time not long after the First Man created the mountains and rivers, and put the light in the sky; not long after the First Woman created the sun and the moon; and not long after the Coyote scattered the stars across the heavens, the Navajo called White Shell Woman lived with her people in the land of golden canyons and red rock bluffs."

Spider Spins a Story features the spider character in various forms and roles, such as a trickster, a teacher, a creator, and a helper. The stories are drawn from different tribes and cultures: Kiowa, Tewa, Zuni, Wiyat, Osage, Muskogee, Navajo, Achomawi, Cherokee, Hopi, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Lakota.
