PART I
The Meaning of Life
"What is the meaning of human life, or of organic life altogether? To answer this question at all implies a religion. Is there any sense then, you ask, in putting it? I answer, the man who regards his own life and that of his fellow creatures as meaningless is not merely unfortunate but almost disqualified for life."

Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955), born in Ulm, Germany, was a brilliant physicist who developed the special and general theories of relativity, which revolutionized our understanding of space and time. He also explained the photoelectric effect, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921. He immigrated to the United States in 1933 to escape Nazi persecution, joining Princeton University as professor of Mathematical and Theoretical Physics, and became a citizen in 1940.

In this abridged edition of The World As I See It, Einstein reflects on his personal philosophy and his vision for a better world, excluding scientific essays published in the first edition. The book was first published in German in 1934 and later translated into English by Alan Harris in 1935. Einstein expresses his views on the meaning of human existence, his ideals of truth, goodness and beauty, his social justice and pacifism, his sense of kinship with fellow-creatures, and his admiration for the creative spirit.
