Clair Turlay Newberry (1903 - 1970) was a renowned American author and illustrator of children's books, especially known for her realistic and charming drawings of cats. She was born in Oregon, and studied art at various schools in the US and France. She published her first book, Herbert the Lion, in 1931, after illustrating a story she had written before leaving for Paris. She went on to create 16 more books, four of which were Caldecott Honor Books: Barkis, Marshmallow, April's Kittens, and T-Bone the Babysitter. She used her own cats and children as models for her books, and captured the personality and behavior of felines with humor and grace.
