$22.00

Written by Lemony Snicket. Illustrated by Maira Kalman. First edition, 2010. Harper, an imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers.

Word number 1:
Bird
The bird sits on the table.

Word number 2:
Despondent
The bird is despondent. In fact, she is
so sad she hops off the table to look
for something to cheer her up.

Word number 3:
Cake
Under the table is a cake.
It is in a box tied up with a string.
The bird unties the string and opens the box
to see what kind of cake is inside.

And so on through the 13th word. Then Lemony gathers the words and word pictures into a story. Of sorts. Then everyone has cake!

Lemony Snicket is the pseudonym of Daniel Handler (1970 - ), an American author best known for A Series of Unfortunate Events, a 13-book series that follows the misadventures of the Baudelaire orphans as they try to escape the clutches of the evil Count Olaf. Snicket has also written a prequel series called All the Wrong Questions, which chronicles his childhood and apprenticeship in V.F.D., The Composer Is Dead, The Latke Who Couldn't Stop Screaming, and 13 Words. Snicket is known for his dark humor, literary references, and wordplay. He often breaks the fourth wall and addresses the reader directly, warning them of the unhappy fate of the characters and urging them to read something else instead.

Maira Kalman (1949 - ) is a celebrated illustrator, author, and designer of books for adults and children, as well as covers for The New Yorker magazine. She is known for her whimsical and colorful style that combines humor, emotion, and curiosity. She has collaborated with various writers and artists, such as Michael Pollan, Daniel Handler, and her late husband Tibor Kalman. She has also exhibited her work in museums and galleries around the world.
