Soviet artist Dementy Shmarinov (1907 - 1999) illustrated this Russian language translation of the great play Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare. Shmarinov was a well-known graphic artist, a long-serving chairman of the Moscow Union of Artists, and a member of numerous state arts organizations.
After 1932, art had to represent the ideals of the state to be officially approved, known as Socialist Realism, and Shmarinov is a fine example of Soviet-era artists who excelled above and beyond political expectations.
Shmarinov is remembered for his illustrations for War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, Peter the Great by Alexei Tolsoy, Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, and Dubrovsky by Alexander Pushkin. He also designed several propaganda posters during and after World War II.
