Up & Down was published in 1989 as a promotional coffee table book by Edward S Gordon Company, the largest commercial real estate company in the Northeast, and eventually the second-largest in the country.
The tall, narrow, steel-gray book evokes the skyscraper and tells a story of life in New York City: "...Manhattan is a small island with an enormous number of people and activities that can only be accommodated vertically."
Designers Chermayeff & Geismar commissioned Ralph Caplan to write the copy and incorporated art, illustrations, and photography by a number of well-known creatives.
