The earliest version of the tale of the little girl with the hooded red cape dates to the 10th century. Of the many versions that evolved over the next thousand years, we're most familiar with the 18th and 19th century tales written by the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault. Traditionally, Red is tricked by the wolf and meets the same fate as her grandmother. But in this Victorian-era telling, she escapes and her father takes care of the wolf.
