The Song of the Sower

"The maples redden in the sun;
In autumn gold the beeches stand;
Loose the tired steer and let
him go
To pasture where the gentians
blow,
And we, who till the grateful
ground,
Fling we the gold shower
around,
Fling wide the generous grain; we fling
O'er the dark mould the green of spring.
For thick the emerald blades shall grow,
When first the March winds melt the snow,
And to the sleeping flowers, below,
The early bluebirds sing."

William Cullen Bryant (1794 - 1878) is remembered as an editor of the New York Evening-Post, an author and poet, and an influential figure in the Free Soil movement, which sought to prevent slavery from being extended West, and an effective promoter of Abraham Lincoln within the abolitionist Republican Party.

This book is so beautiful. It arrived fairly quickly, was well packaged and is even better in person than it looks in the picture. Thank you!
