The Thirsty Pony by Paul Laune - 1940 Edition - Vintage Child Book, American West, Oklahoma Cattle Ranch, Horses

Sorry, this item has sold.

In this 1940 edition of The Thirsty Pony by Paul Laune, an Oklahoma cattle rancher gives his son Dick a smart pony named Blue.

Written and illustrated by Paul Laune. 1940 edition. Grosset & Dunlap, New York.

"Dick lived with his family on the edge of a small town in Oklahoma. Some of the neighbors had given him the job of taking their milk cows to pasture. Every morning during the summer months Dick drove them in a herd across a small stream and turned them into the meadow. There the cows were left to graze until evening when he rounded them up again and drove them back to their owners. Dick always rode on a little mouse-colored pony named Blue."

Dick's father gives him Blue to develop responsibility for the care and feeding of his horse. But Dick becomes frustrated when blamed by his father for leaving water on in the corral and flooding the water trough, wasting water and making a mess. He wants to blame a grumpy old neighbor who doesn't believe he's old enough to handle the responsibility. But Dick's surprised to discover the culprit, and he solves the mystery.

Paul Laune (1899 - 1977) was an Oklahoma-born artist and illustrator who painted scenes of the American West, and illustrated book covers, including Hardy Boys Mysteries.
