Winter's Tales by Isak Dinesen - 1942 Random House BCE - Vintage Book, Wartime Books, Dinesen Short Stories

1942 Random House wartime book club edition (BCE) of Winter's Tales by Isak Dinesen.

Written by Isak Dinesen. 1942, wartime book club edition. Random House.

"Three-quarters of a century ago there lay in Antwerp, near the harbour, a small hotel named the Queen's Hotel. It was a neat, respectable place, where sea captains stayed with their wives.

To this house there came on a March evening, a young man, sunk in gloom. As he walked up from the harbour, to which he had come on a ship from England, he was, he felt, the loneliest being in the world. And there was no one to whom he could speak of his misery, for to the eyes of the world he must seem safe and fortunate, a young man to be envied by everyone."

Isak Dinesen (1885 – 1962)is the nom de plume for Karen Blixen, Danish author of Out of Africa and Babette's Feast, and nominated or short-listed several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Winter's Tales is a collection of eleven short stories published five years after Out of Africa, the acclaimed novel about her life in Kenya.

"A departure from her previous Gothic works, the stories reflect the starkness of the times, occupation tinged with courage and pride, and hope for the future. The stories do not reflect resistance, but resilience, and explore the interdependence of opposites. She examines shame versus pride in "The Heroine", cowardice and courage in "The Pearls", master and servant in "The Invincible Slave-Owners", and life versus death as well as freedom versus imprisonment in "Peter and Rosa". In "Sorrow-acre", the best-known story of the collection, Blixen explores victimization and oppression." - Wikipedia
