Johanna Spyri (1827 - 1901) was a Swiss author, best remembered for Heidi, which has been in continuous publication since it first appeared in 1880, but went on to write more than fifty stories.
Spyri wrote "for children and those who love children".
INTRODUCTION
"Johanna Heusser Spyri was born in the little Swiss town of Hirzel, canton of Zurich, in 1827, and died in Zurich in 1901. She wrote especially for young people, her writings dealing mostly with Swiss mountain life and portraying the thrifty, industrious nature of the people. The stories are sometimes sad, - for the peasant's life is full of hardships, - but through them all a fresh mountain breeze is blowing and a play of sunlight illumines the high Alps."
Moni faces a crises of conscience: Keep a secret, a lie, to save his favorite goat Meggy from the butcher or betray the secret and tell the truth and let Meggy go. In the end, he does the right thing and earns a happy ending.
