1912 edition of Heimatlos: Two Stories for Children, and for Those Who Love Children by Johanna Spyri, author of Heidi.
Written by Johanna Spyri. Translated by Emma Stelter Hopkins. Illustrated by Frederick Richardson. 1912, Ginn and Company, The Athenaeum Press. (Originally published in 1877.)
Johanna Spyri (1827 - 1901) was a Swiss author, best remembered for Heidi, which has been in continuous publication since it first appeared in 1880, but went on to write more than fifty stories.
Spyri first wrote Heimatlos, which consists of two stories: Lake Sils and Lake Garda, and Wiseli Finds Her Place.
Emma S. Hopkins, the translator, explains her wish to share these stories, so familiar to young German readers, to a wider English-speaking audience.
"It is the hope of the translator that these two stories, so widely read by the children of Germany, will help our own little ones, in these days of general prosperity, to appreciate the everyday comforts of home, to which they grow so accustomed as often to take them for granted, with little evidence of gratitude."
