First edition of From Ice Mountain: Indian Settlement of the Americas by Don Perceval.

Written by Don Perceval. SIGNED introduction by Frank Waters. 1979, first edition. Northland Press, Flagstaff, Arizona.

Don Louis Perceval (1908 - 1979) was an English-born artist with a love for the American Southwest and the Native Peoples.

Frank Waters (1902 - 1995) was an American writer of fiction and history of the Southwest, and founder of the Frank Waters Foundation.

UCLA Library Special Collections:

"Perceval was born in Woodford, Essex, England, in 1908; he grew up in California and studied at Chouinard Art Institute; attended London's Royal College of Art and the Heatherley Art School; in addition to his work as a commercial artist, he also served on the faculty of Chouinard Art Institute and the Art Department of Pomona College; he is noted as a painter of Hopi and Navajo Indians."

Front flap:

"The theory of population migration across the Bering Strait has never been recounted as artfully as it is in this simple, human presentation. Don Perceval's narration accompanies his pictorial recreation of the march of prehistoric man across the continents. These forthright little figures stride determinedly across the pages as they once strode across the miles as far as Central and South America.

"Perceval focuses on the development of culture and interaction of people who eventually settled in the American Southwest. The Basketmakers are superseded by the Pueblo farmers who must deal with the warrior-nomad Apaches and Navajos. And the day comes when traders from Mexico bring startling news of white men on strange animals who would forever alter the history of a people."
