A 1938 edition of A Christmas Carol In Prose - Being a Ghost Story of Christmas by Charles Dickens, illustrated by Everett Shinn, introduction by Lionel Barrymore.

Written by Charles Dickens. Illustrated by Everett Shinn. Introduction by Lionel Barrymore. 1938 edition. The John C. Winston Company, publishers.

A nicely bound and illustrated 1930s edition of the Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol In Prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, with facsimile pages from Dickens's original manuscript.

Everett Shinn (1876 - 1953) provides the visual imagery of awakening on the streets of Victorian London. Shinn was an America Realist painter most recognized for his New York City street scenes and counted as a member of The Eight and the Ashcan school. His wonderful artwork places this book among the most prized of 20th C editions.

The introduction by Lionel Barrymore capitalizes on his famous performance of Scrooge in a radio play for Campbell Playhouse.

The Foreword references Barrymore first performing Scrooge on the radio "four years ago", in 1934, which confirms a publication date of 1938 but leaves which printing an open question.
